Thematic Unit: Inquiry Learning- Rhythm

Rhythm Activity
Learning Objective: In this lesson the students will apply what they have learned from previous lessons about rhythm, in order to create their own group rhythms in the correct time signature.

Lesson Plan

1. Mrs.Guthrie reviews basic rhythm concepts:
-Quarter notes/rests
- 8th notes/rests
- Half notes/rests
- Whole notes/rests
-16th notes
-Dotted quarter notes
-Time signatures- 4/4, 2/4, ¾, 6/8

2. Mrs.Guthrie plays musical excerpts that demonstrate the various time signatures

3. The students are divided into groups of 3 and each group is given an envelope with various rhythms/notes inside. In each group there will be one recorder, one beat-keeper, and one person to demonstrate the rhythm for the class.

4. The students will be given about 5 minutes to create 4 measures of music within each time signature. After the 5 minutes, each group will perform their creation for the class, and then Mrs.Guthrie will assign a new time signature.

Teaching Techniques
Guided Questions:
What type of notes did this group use?
Does each measure fit within the time signature?
Could you feel a beat?
